October is National Dental Hygiene Month We are here to help guide you through good oral hygiene. In the first week we introduced you to The DC Dentist a Holistic, Biological & Eco-Friendly Dental Office located on Capitol Hill near Eastern Market at 509 11th St. SE and over the next two weeks we will continue to amaze you with facts concerning your oral health which in turn affects your overall health and well-being. Let’s get started.
Day 8
As we stated on Day 1, your oral health care is the gateway to your overall health and well-being. You need to have good oral hygiene habits to help preserve all teeth for their daily function – eating, talking, and smiling.
Day 9
The first in line for the digestive tract is your mouth. In order for food to do its job, your mouth must first break it down using your tongue, teeth and saliva. If your teeth are misaligned causing difficulties when chewing you are likely to develop stomach blockage, gastrointestinal discomfort or even skin problems like eczema.
Day 10
Seeing your holistic dentist and hygienist on a regular basis can help prevent ailments such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. The same bacteria found in your mouth can be found in the arteries of your heart.
Day 11
Flossing actually adds years to your life. Floss like a Boss and enjoy a longer healthier life.
Day 12
Developing relationships with your Dentist and Hygienist is a wonderful way to learn about our office as well as learn about our lives outside of the office. Building healthy relationships is a great way to relieve stress and also helps you to live longer.
Day 13
Being healthy yourself will help you to educate, advocate and promote dental hygiene to other loved ones to ensure they too are healthy.
Day 14
Seeing your holistic dentist and hygienist on a regular basis aids in the fight against bad breath which can directly affect one’s confidence. We want you to speak with confidence and to smile often.
Day 15
It’s important that you see our hygienist both before and after you have had major dental work performed. This will allow for your dental work to remain in proper working order.
Day 16
In order to keep your body in proper working condition you must maintain good hygiene, eat healthy and get your exercise. You’re welcome to join our Friday Night Yoga Class. Call us at 202-544-3626 for details.
Day 17
Healthy babies need a healthy start and so do their parents. To ensure a healthy pregnancy come see our holistic dentist and hygienist before, during and after your delivery.
Day 18
Every time you come to see our hygienist you will receive a free oral cancer screening. This is extremely important as one of the risk factors for developing oral cancer is poor dental hygiene. Prevention is the best medicine.
Day 19
Interested in weight loss? Good hygiene aids in portion control. If you are craving some food, brush your teeth. Absolutely nothing tastes good after freshly brushed teeth. Cravings generally last for only a few minutes so by the time you brush your teeth for 2 minutes and get back to the kitchen, your craving should have dissolved.
Day 20
Another way to lose weight while taking care of your oral health… Brushing for 2 minutes three times a day is equal to burning 5,500 calories in one full year’s time. Remember to brush for a full 2 minutes and you will be burning off the calories in a year’s time.
Day 21
Now that you’ve learned some very important reasons for seeing our hygienists and for maintaining good oral health we will enjoy the last week of National Dental Hygiene Month and all the good you get out of having a clean healthy mouth. Remember, scheduling regular dental visits will help prevent cavities. Plaque, which eats away at your tooth enamel, is the leading cause of tooth decay. If left unattended plaque can lead to cavities. By brushing, flossing and keeping regular dental cleanings plaque can be removed.
Day 22
Missing teeth are no fun and can wreak havoc on your digestive system, let alone your beautiful smile. A major cause of tooth loss is gum disease. As gum disease worsens the plaque moves down your tooth destroying the bone in your jaw. At this point your teeth begin to loosen and eventually fall out. The chances of this happening to you can be reduced by seeing our holistic dentist regularly, having our hygienist clean your teeth and by practicing good oral hygiene at home.
Day 23
Dental cleanings help to brighten your smile. Some culprits that can stain your teeth include your fresh cup of joe or coffee, tea and wine. Even smoking can stain your teeth. Your hygienist can remove built up stains and leave you with a brighter, whiter smile.
Day 24
Wondering if your breath is fresh. Talk to our hygienist who will inform you of ways to maintain fresh breath. Practicing good oral hygiene at home and visiting The DC Dentist on a regular basis will help to combat persistent bad breath. Also a great way to maintain good oral health.
Day 25
There is a great connection between good oral health and one’s overall health and well-being. Regular dental cleanings might lower your risk from some diseases which can be detected early during your dental exam.
Day 26
Saving money is a great value and benefit to all. If you take advantage of your insurance and use your benefits now for regular dental visits it can save you in the long run. Preventive medicine is the best medicine of all as it can help you avoid more costly and extensive procedures later.
Day 27
If you see blood while you’re brushing, that’s a sign of gum inflammation which can be an early sign of gum disease. If our hygienist sees this early on, it is reversible. Our hygienist stops the bleeding by thoroughly cleaning under and around your gums, then shows you how to prevent the build up from reoccurring.
Day 28
When your mouth feels clean it makes you feel good. Same for your teeth, when they are whiter your confidence improves. Feeling your breath is fresh makes you more comfortable talking and kissing.
Day 29
No matter how well you brush, floss and rinse there will always be parts of your mouth that you will not be able to effectively clean like a hygienist. Our hygienists are trained in the latest equipment as well as technique to best clean your mouth and rely on their training for finding exactly where tarter or plaque is hidden from the naked eye.
Day 30
We eat to live and life is better with teeth. Make healthy choices when eating and drinking as it affects your whole body, which includes your mouth. People who drink 3 or more cups of soda a day have more tooth decay, fillings and tooth loss than others. Time to pick up a nice glass of water!
Day 31
In this day of social media many young adults depend on their smile to deliver their message. Interestingly enough, many young adults have untagged themselves from a photo on Facebook because of their smile. Come to The DC Dentist, we will bring out your best smile. It’s not just a cleaning, it’s your life!
