High Blood Pressure Awareness Month

Did you know high blood pressure can lead to heart disease? May is High Blood Pressure Awareness Month and in our office we discuss with our patients the connection between inflammatory conditions of the mouth and heart. Seeing a dentist can help you to prevent heart disease and get on track for good overall health through proper oral care. Heart disease is preventable.

According to the American Heart Association High blood pressure (also referred to as HBP, or hypertension) is when your blood pressure, the force of blood flowing through your blood vessels, is consistently too high. Please see the Blood Pressure chart below for the ranges according to the American Heart Association.

Here are a few life changes that will help you to avoid and/or manage high blood pressure:

Eat a well-balanced diet low in salt
Limit alcohol intake
Take part in regular physical activity
Manage stress levels
Maintain a healthy weight
Quit smoking
Work together with your doctor and your dentist
